ANSWER

Heloisa (Helo) Pinheiro is the original "Girl from Ipanema". Songwriters Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes were inspired to write the famous song in 1962 after watching Pinheiro, then a teenager, repeatedly walk by on the way to Rio's trendy Ipanema beach. As with many good ideas, the idea to write this song came to them as they were sitting in a bar one day. Pinheiro was sued this year by the families of the now deceased songwriters when she opened a jewelry store in San Paolo called "Garota de Ipanema" ("Girl from Ipanema").

(Honorable mention to Allan Christensen for pointing out that Astrud Gilberto is also sometimes referred to as "The Girl from Ipanema", for her early recording of the song.)
