The New Star Trek

Wait a minute! Hold on!  I really hate time travel conundrums.  Don't get me wrong, the new movie was really enjoyable.  I am surprised at the amount of young people that enjoyed the screening and still understood all of the inside jokes that referred to the original series.  And, Holy Cow! the Spock and Uhura kissing was really hot.

If I hadn't watched every original episode over and over then I don't think this movie would have stood on its own.  Yet, I watched the movie with a bunch of 18 year olds that were born after the original series was dead and gone but they still understood the movie and were cheering at the end.

I feel that this movie was like reading a "what if?" comic book that could change everything in the universe yet the universe would still stay the same when the book was done.  But, this book remains open and the universe is still in limbo.

Who is J.J. Abrams to change the whole Star Trek universe?  But, who is J.J. Abrams to not change the Star Trek universe?  The past is the past and cannot be changed.  The future is the future and maybe or maybe not be changed.  At least now we can write a whole new story for our favorite charachters and still be open.

I loved the new Star Trek movie.  The permanent alteration to the timeline was disconcerting at first, but I think it was necessary.  I knew they were doing a "reset" anyway, and I was glad they at least tried to tie it into the previous body of work.  I was afraid they would just start over with no explanation.

I think the reset will be a good thing.  It opens up a lot of possibilities.  Kirk as an even more rebellious bad-boy.  Spock with the destruction of his whole civilization coloring his judgement.  Scotty with a real Scottish accent.  And Spock and Uhura - THAT was HOT.  Ooohhh-yeahhhh.

I was glad to see they finally wrested control away from Rick Berman and company.  It needed fresh blood, and JJ Abrams did a nice job with it.  He may have single-handedly saved the franchise.

The weird thing is - a lot of people that weren't that into Star Trek, or weren't fans of the original series, are seeing the movie, and it's making them happy.  It's one thing to make Star Trek fans happy, but people with no previous emotional investment in these characters are finding a real connection.

I wasn't crazy about the idea of a "reboot" of the Star Trek universe, but now that I've seen it, I think it was the best thing the could have done.  It may be the smartest move they've made with Star Trek in a long time.  Now that they've done it, I hope they continue to treat the franchise with as much care as they've shown in this movie.

I can't wait to see the next movie.  And I wanna see this one again.

(If nothing else, they've broken the even=good / odd=sucks cycle they were in.)
